Origins of viticulture
The roots of viticulture in Grünhaus (Mertesdorf) go back to Roman times. In 633, Dagobert I gave the property on the Grüneberg to the monastery of St. Maximin in Trier. For many centuries Maximin Grünhaus was farmed by the Benedictine abbey.
Changing rulers at Maximin Grünhaus
Until 1810, the estate was under French administration. In 1810, the first secular owner acquired the estate at auction. Later, in 1882, it was acquired as a dowry for Ida Louise von Stumm-Halberg by Carl Ferdinand Freiherr von Stumm-Halberg when she married General Conrad von Schubert. Since 1981, the winery has been managed by Carl-Ferdinand von Schubert, who has been awarded Winemaker of the Year according to Gault-Millau and has received numerous other honors.
