The Bordeaux legend
Château Mouton Rothschild, located in Pauillac near Bordeaux, is one of the most prestigious wineries in the world. It is located in the north of Pauillac and belongs to the original English branch of the famous Rothschild banking dynasty.
A Historical Tribute to the Château Mouton Rothschild Estate
The Château Mouton Rothschild estate was awarded the title of "Deuxième Cru Classé" in the famous wine evaluation of 1855 during the Paris World Fair. In 1973, Jacques Chirac upgraded it to the highest category, "Premier Cru Classé".
Rooted in tradition
Philippine de Rothschild-Sereys (1933-2014), former owner, and her son Philippe (* 1963) are members of Primum Familiae Vini, a worldwide association of traditional family businesses in viticulture and wine trade. Château Mouton Rothschild is also an honorary member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, which was founded in 1973.
Château Mouton Rothschild: A terroir in perfection
Grape varieties and stocking of Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild's impressive 82 hectares of vines are masterfully planted. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates with 77%, accompanied by Merlot (12%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The average vine density is 8,500 per hectare and the vines are on average 48 years old.
Variety in the winery
About 300,000 bottles of the premium Mouton wine are produced annually, as well as a variable number of bottles of the second wine "Le Petit Mouton". In addition, a small parcel of nearly 4 hectares yields the white wine called Aile d'Argent, which accounts for 18,000 to 24,000 bottles. The main grape varieties here are Sémillon (57%) and Sauvignon Blanc (42%), complemented by a touch of Muscadelle.
Château Mouton Rothschild - Terroir in perfection
Both Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Lafite-Rothschild are located north on the Saint-Estèphe border. The soil consists of a high gravel layer on a limestone base.
This unique soil favors the Cabernet Sauvignon vine. The poor soil and the natural reduction of yields contribute to the excellence. The gravel ensures early ripening of the grapes and the deep roots of the vines, forced by the gravel, provide a diverse source of nutrients and contribute to the aromatic diversity of the wine.
The variety of Mouton wines
The range of quality
Mouton is known for the wide quality range of its wines. In outstanding years, for example, when the spicy Petit Verdot matures to perfection and flows into the cuvée of the first wine, special Mouton wines are created.
Special vintages are therefore: 2000, 1998, 1995, 1986, 1982, 1961.
The extraordinary case of the 1945 vintage
When properly stored, it is one of the treasures of hedonistic wine connoisseurs and shares its exceptional and cult status with only a few other Bordeaux wines such as Château Cheval Blanc from 1947, Château Latour from 1961 or Château Margaux from 1900. Accordingly, the prices at auctions are high.
