Foundation and success
The Joh. Jos. Prüm winery, often known as "J.J. Prüm", is located in Wehlen on the Mosel River and was founded in 1911 by Johann Josef Prüm. Under the management of Manfred and Katharina Prüm, their wines achieve records worldwide.
A long winemaking tradition
The ancestors of the Prüm family had been growing grapes in Graach and Wehlen for centuries. They were courtiers and winegrowers for ecclesiastical landlords. The secularization of the Moselle in 1803 led to the expropriation of church property, as a result of which the Prüm family expanded its vineyard holdings.
The rise
In the 19th century, the winery established itself as a leading winery in the Middle Moselle region under the name "S.A. Prüm". Mathias Prüm took over the estate from his father Sebastian Alois Prüm. After Mathias' death, his widow Anna Maria Kieren continued to run the winery together with her brother-in-law Jakob Prüm.
The estate was divided in 1911, with Johann Josef Prüm establishing his own business. This division led to the creation of other wineries that exist today.
Innovation and wine style
Sebastian Alois Prüm's son Sebastian Alois Prüm developed an innovative wine style with fruit-driven and residually sweet wines. His sons, including Manfred Prüm, continued this success.
The present management of J.J. Prüm
After the death of Wolfgang Prüm, Manfred Prüm runs the winery Joh. Jos. Prüm together with his daughter Katharina Prüm.
The vineyards of Joh. Jos. Prüm: A splendor of nature
The vineyards
Joh. Jos. Prüm's vineyards cover approximately 20 hectares and span some of the Moselle's most famous sites, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. These vineyards are a legacy of Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of the family.
The queen of grape varieties
Joh. Jos. Prüm is dedicated exclusively to the planting of Riesling grapes, one of the noblest grape varieties in the world. This variety is the pride of the winery and contributes to the production of exceptional wines.
The annual production
Each year, approximately 180,000 bottles of wine are bottled by Joh. Jos. Prüm. These wines are known for their exceptional quality and regularly rank among the best in all of Germany.
A cultural heritage
The wines of Joh. Jos. Prüm are not only appreciated for their taste, but are also considered Germany's cultural capital. Influential personalities such as the respected wine critic Stuart Pigott compare them to greats such as Patrick Süßkind, Wim Wenders and Georg Baselitz.
